He then created the capacity to provide essential business functions to small businesses that could not yet justify full-time staff. He continues to provide marketing and consulting services to small and medium sized businesses. His consulting focus is on strategy development and business turnarounds.
The latter half of Gabel’s corporate experience was in working with strategically compromised business units. Working with local management, a viable strategy and turnaround plan was developed. He would then take responsibility for the unit and implement the plan. This affords him the unique perspective of not only a strategic consultant, but someone with considerable experience in having responsibility for the implementation of strategic redirection and managing in a turnaround environment.
Gabel graduated from Lehigh University with a BS in Marketing and from Boston University cum laude with an MBA in Finance. Subsequently, he has attended the Darden School of Business at the University of Virginia, the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, the Lean Enterprise Design Systems Institute at the University of Tennessee and the Center for Creative Leadership among others to expand his knowledge of essential elements of business management. His academic training is in addition to 28 years of industry experience.

What has allowed Richard Gabel to be an effective consultant is the breadth of his education and experience. His under graduate degree is in marketing and his graduate degree is in finance. Prior to going into general management, Gabel held senior level positions in treasury, business development, marketing, and strategic planning. In general management, he had responsibility for all business functions.
Gabel’s work experience ranges from senior level corporate staff of a Fortune 200 company, to President of a start-up joint venture.
Concerning strategic planning, Gabel worked with Michael Porter and his consulting company, the Monitor Group, when Porter was retained by Eaton Corporation to structure their strategic planning process. Gabel was the in-house subject matter expert on this project. At a
corporate level, Gabel was responsible for the strategic plan with the Vice President of Planning and Strategic Development, whom he reported to. At a division level, he was the go to person for interceding in business units that needed a strategic extreme makeover. He would develop turnaround plans for distressed businesses and then take over the unit to implement the plan.
As a business owner, Gabel’s consulting work has been with small business exclusively. His appetite for working with large businesses has been satisfied and he now looks for opportunities to help small businesses grow. He is working only with small businesses that have growth potential and need help charting the course to make that happen.
His education and experience allow him to provide a level of expertise not available to entrepreneurs and small businesses. He enjoys doing this, and having played the role of “barbarian” so many times in his corporate life, feels that it is a far more satisfying and rewarding
experience.
